A Practical Introduction to using Biochar in Agriculture

We will provide both practical and theory-based activities exploring how Biochar can be made and used in small scale agriculture. This will include learning how Biochar sequesters Carbon and managing the nutrient and water cycles

Description

The course is designed to give a good basic knowledge of what biochar is, what it is made from, how it is made and its applications in small and medium scale agriculture. The course will start with a day’s theory and information at the Ffarm Moelyci Education Barn. Day 2 will be a practical session at another nearby farm discussing simple biomass harvesting and preparation, lighting a small 25T/yr batch kiln, working with biochar and discovering ways of using it on the farm. Day three will be a site visit at a much larger (1000T/yr) plant 2 hrs away (transport provided). This will include a visit to the working plant, a visit to the animal sheds, and to the fields where the composted char/manure is applied, and where biomass crops such as Hemp are grown. Day Four will be back at the Moelyci Education Barn and will involve explanation of the Circular Carbon Management System and its related modelling tools, and a workshop where participants will design their own pilot project and present their models to the group. The course will close with the presentation of certificates.

European Dimension

The course delivers practical knowledge which is applicable in all EU regions. As part of the THREE-C Network of providers and practitioners, we regularly share information and learning with other regional partners. We attend transnational conferences and seminars and can draw on a growing library of examples of good practice in different countries.

Our approach is based on both the effective transfer of knowledge: ‘learning by doing. It also contributes to building an on-line transnational community amongst those interested in the topics we cover, who will keep in contact and exchange their knowledge and experiences through mutual encouragement and peer-to-peer support.

Tentative Program & Schedule

Day 1: Conference Suite. AM - Basic Theory of Biochar, and its production. PM – Biochar applications and critical factors

Day 2: Site Visit to small scale on-farm plant. AM Firing the batch kiln and Farm Walk. PM: Working with biomass and biochar – blending and composting.

Day 3: Site visit (2 hr drive) to large scale on-farm plant with heat and electricity generation. Farm walk including animal shed and field/crop demonstration.

Day 4: AM: Using the Circular Carbon Management System and tools. PM: designing your own project using the tools.

Expected Outcome

  • An understanding of Biochar, as a useful practical tool in building resilience in small-scale agriculture.

  • A fact-based understanding that Pyrolysis could/should replace combustion in most situations

  • An appreciation that Biochar is the ONLY tool currently available to the world that can be up-scaled quickly and cheaply by all groups and communities in all regions, to effectively combat the climate change.

  • The confidence to effectively pass this knowledge on to others

  • The skills and tools to develop their own projects

Certification

A participation certificate will be presented to each participant, together with a presentation version of their pilot project plan.

About Eryri National Park
