Description

“Heritage communities are self-organised, self-managed groups of individuals who are interested in progressive social transformation of relationships between peoples, places and stories, with an inclusive approach based on an enhanced definition of heritage." (FARO Convention, 2005) The role and values of heritage, both tangible or intangible, have evolved greatly in the past decade. The concept of heritage community and its function is in the forefront of the EU Cultural Strategy and FARO Convention. This course will provide theoretical input on heritage community (HC), the role and importance of HC in promoting social inclusion as well as practical workshop on understanding the needs of HC stakeholders and developing engagement and sustainability strategies. The Building Your Heritage Community course is developed by the Erasmus Plus Project: People Places Stories (2021-2023).


European Dimension

The course is delivered for transnational and interdisciplinary and teams of heritage community practitioner and active heritage community members from all over Europe


Tentative Program & Schedule

Day1:

  • Input: Introduction to Heritage and Heritage Community
  • Excursion: site visits to local heritage/heritage communities

Day 2 
Covering Stage 1-2

  • Input: Introduction to the People Place Stories and the 6-stages of HC building
  • Workshop: identifying your heritage communities and its values.

Day 3
Covering Stage 3-4

  • Input: Roles and functions of Heritage Community under the FARO Convention
  • Workshop: understanding and accessing the need of your HC and its stakeholders

Day 4
Covering Stage 5-6

  • Input: Storytelling and Placetelling: creating a narrative
  • Workshop: creating a story for your heritage community to attract and engage with new audiences/community members


Expected Outcome

  • knowledge of heritage community and FARO Convention and their values for the society
  • be an active member of a local heritage community
  • competence development as a facilitator of heritage community
